Does Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park have full RV hookups?
Not quite. Signature, Signature Plus and Group campsites can accommodate RV’s but there is no water or sewer hookups available onsite. Sites are designated as trailer friendly online when you book and can range from Class B&C to Van vehicles. There is a community dump station onsite that is complimentary for all guests.
Do RV campsites at Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park require leveling?
RVs will require some amount of leveling at Ramble at Great Sand Dunes.
Can I bring my RV to camp at Ramble at Great Sand Dunes?
Considering RV camping with Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park? To make sure you’re prepared to park your vehicle at the campsite, we wanted to remind you of a few details before you arrive.
- Ramble does not offer any hookups at trailer friendly campsites.
- Ramble has a dump station accessible for all RV campers to use complimentary which is located by the restroom.
- The following RV classifications are permitted: Class B&C, Pop Up, Travel Trailer, Van, Truck Trailer, Slide-Outs and Travel Camper.
- Generators are not permitted at the campground. Fans, air conditioners and larger electronics will drain all power to your campsite.
- RV Campsite 9 is the only pull through parking site. The other RV campsites require pull in/back out.
- Ramble has trailer-friendly campsites which are denoted on the listing page. To confirm that your vehicle will fit the specific campsite driveways, please refer to this article.

Which sites are “trailer-friendly” at the Great Sand Dunes campground?
Ramble provides a range of campsites suitable for larger vehicles such as RVs, trailers, and vans. These designated campsites are labeled as “Trailer Friendly” in the reservation title. If you’re planning to camp with any of these vehicle types, please ensure you reserve a “Trailer Friendly” campsite. Our campgrounds operate off-grid, meaning we only offer dry camping facilities. There are no water, sewer, or electric hookups available at our campground. However, we do provide a community dump station for guests to use during their stay.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to get to Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park?
Vehicles with four wheel drive are recommended. After exiting the highway, you will be driving on dirt road until you reach Ramble at Great Sand Dunes. From there, our roads are compacted gravel.
What is the parking situation like at the Great Sand Dunes campground?
Ramble offers convenient parking spaces which are adjacent to the campsite aside from Adventure campsites, which are walk-in only. To make sure you’re prepared to park your vehicle(s) at your campsite, please review the parking dimensions below. Ramble does not have overflow parking, so we want to be certain that you’re set up for a successful camping trip at the dunes.

Absolutely! Ramble campgrounds are designed with the entire family in mind. From our easy-to-use outdoor kitchens made for family meals, to our centrally located bathrooms with infant changing tables, Ramble is certainly a kid friendly campground.
Ramble has children sized bikes and sand boards to rent and a play area with a swing set!
It’s easy to enjoy a weekend of camping at Ramble or venture out to the National Park which is a short 20 minute drive.

Great Sand Dunes Oasis:
This is the closest place to the national park to rent camping equipment. They offer a variety of gear, including tents, sleeping bags, coolers, and more.
Four Seasons Adventure Sports:
This rental shop is located in Alamosa, about 30 minutes from the park. They offer a range of camping equipment, as well as bikes and other outdoor gear.
Outdoors Geek:
This rental company has a location in Denver, about 3.5 hours from the park. They offer a wide selection of camping gear, including tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and more. Rent here.

Pro Tip: It’s a good idea to reserve your rental equipment in advance, especially during peak season (May through September).
What should I wear to camp at Ramble at Great Sand Dunes?
Camping in the San Luis Valley can be unpredictable at times. This is a semi-arid climate, meaning hot temperatures during the day and colder temperatures in the evening. To help you pack for your Ramble camping trip, check out helpful packing list below!

Summer temperatures can vary from 45 degrees to 90 degrees in the day and night. If you’re planning to visit the national park in the warmer months, sand temperatures can get up to 150 degrees, and afternoon thunderstorms are likely to roll in. Make sure to plan accordingly!

If you’re leaving from Denver, CO to Ramble at the Great Sand Dunes using I-285 South:
1. Start in Denver, CO
- Head south from your location and navigate to US-285 S.
- You can access US-285 S from several points in Denver, including via Hampden Avenue.
2. Take US-285 S toward Fairplay
- Follow US-285 S through the foothills and mountain towns.
- Pass through Conifer, Bailey, and Fairplay.
- Stay on US-285 S for approximately 120 miles.
3. Continue on US-285 S to Poncha Springs
- After Fairplay, continue over Poncha Pass toward Poncha Springs.
- At Poncha Springs, continue straight to stay on US-285 S.
4. Transition to US-160 E toward Alamosa
- Near Monte Vista, turn left onto US-160 E toward Alamosa.
- Drive for approximately 20 miles.
5. Turn onto State Highway 150 N
- Just before Alamosa, turn left onto State Highway 150 N (toward the Great Sand Dunes).
- Continue for about 16 miles.
6. Turn onto County Road 112
- Turn left onto County Road 112 (Lane 3 N).
- Drive for about 2 miles to reach Ramble at the Great Sand Dunes, which will be on your right.

- Get on I-25 S from your location.

2. Take I-25 S to US-160 W
- Stay on I-25 S for approximately 80 miles to Walsenburg.

3. Continue on US-160 W to State Highway 150 N
- Follow US-160 W for approximately 65 miles, passing through Fort Garland.

Enjoy beautiful and vast 320-acres of rolling sand dunes nestled up against the Sangre De Cristo Mountain range. Ramble’s campground is designed with the natural flow of the existing terrain and vegetation to provide every campsite with privacy and spaciousness that you have to see to believe.
Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park is dog friendly and family oriented, so make sure to bring your entire crew to the park.
As far as activities go, there’s plenty to do. Bring a bike or rent one from us and enjoy miles of trail. Each campsite has horseshoe pits or corn hole tables and a community library of games and books. As if that’s not enough- Great Sand Dunes National Park, Medano Creek, Zapata Falls, Hooper Pool, and San Luis Valley are all just a short drive away.
What should I wear during a hike in the San Luis Valley?
Hiking Boots or Trail Running Shoes
Either hiking boots or trail running shoes are a great option for exploring the trails in and around the San Luis Valley. The two most important things are that your shoes provide good traction and solid support to your feet.
Moisture-Wicking Clothing
Wearing clothing that is moisture-wicking and quick-drying will help keep you cool on warmer days. Choose a t-shirt that’s specifically designed for hiking, running, or other outdoor activities. The same goes for your shorts and socks.
Sun Hat
The San Luis Valley receives a significant amount of sunshine and many trails are above the tree-line. You’ll definitely want a hat to help keep the sun off your face. Plus then you can easily take in all those mountain views without worrying about getting burnt.
What should I bring on a hike through the San Luis Valley?
Water
Always bring water on a hike, even if you’re planning a short one. Summer temperatures can get warm including at higher elevations and the air can be dry (making you thirsty). Consider bringing a water bottle or bladder that can hold 1 liter to 3 liters (per person), depending on the length of your hike.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes can really pack a punch for helping you feel great out on trail. We often sweat when we hike, losing essential minerals and vitamins. Electrolyte packets replenish these nutrients and can make a big difference in your Colorado summer hiking experience.
Snacks
Snacks are a must for any hike. Consider packing a mix of salty, savory, and sweet. Some go-to classic snacks for hiking include chips, dried mango, and jerky. If you’re wanting to pack a lunch, consider pre-cooked bacon with tortillas and avocado.
Day Pack
You’ll have to put those snacks and water somewhere, making a day pack another essential item to bring on a hike. Your pack doesn’t need to have all the bells and whistles, but it should feel comfortable.
Sunscreen
We’re closer to the sun here (at 7,500 feet and higher) so you’ll want to protect your skin with sunscreen. And don’t forget that SPF chapstick for your lips!
Altitude Considerations
Many trails go above 8,000 feet (and up to 14,000 feet depending on which ones you select). If you’re visiting from lower altitudes, your body will most likely be working harder than it normally does while hiking. You’ll need to drink plenty of water while also making sure to eat throughout the day.

This quick and easy hike is perfect for families and features a 25-foot waterfall with a creek crossing. You’ll also get views of nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park. The gravel road up to the trail can be bumpy (adding to the fun) but a high-clearance vehicle isn’t required.
